I’m used to wearing a free hand-me-down (albeit never been worn) pair of Karrimor boots when I got hiking. Boots that have no grip, no support and most definitely aren’t waterproof. After lots of sketchy, trecherous walks in my hand-me-down Karrimors, it’s about time I dug deep into my pockets and invested in a good pair of walking boots. After plenty of research, I finally settled on the Salomon Queset 4D 3 GTX (try saying that fast five times…).

So, what did I think of the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX for women? And, would I recommend them? Well… let’s have a little look into these hiking boots and how I feel they perform when it comes to comfort, stability and being waterproof.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX 3 Women Hiking Boots Review

Hiking Helvellyn along Striding Edge in deep snow and on icy scrambles with no equipment was risky (and probably stupid) yet incredibly fun. We went completely unprepared with not a snow-shoe or hiking pole in sight; just my trusty hand-me-down Karrimor boots. For someone who’s yet to learn how to be balanced, I was suprisingly impressed that I survived the walk…

Although they’ve served me well over the years, it was time to turn my old walking boots in. After an uncountable number of risky walks in cheap boots and knowing many more walks lay ahead, it was time to invest in something more secure.

My balance and stability is near non-existent so I knew I wanted a pair of boots that supported my ankles. As soon as I laid eyes on the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, I knew they were the boots for me.

To put my Salomon Quest 4Ds to the test, we headed out to hike Skiddaw on a cold and blustery Winter’s day, ticking off several small Wainwrights along the way.

Our Winter hike up Skiddaw was trecherous making it the perfect day to put my new hiking boots to the test. From Skree to ice to snow and boggy fields, I was excited to quite literally get stuck in and see how the Salomon Quests performed in these truly British conditions.

COMFORT – How Comfortable Are The Salomon Quest 4Ds?

Comfort, for me, is a big deal. I’ll always choose comfort over style when it comes to my daily wardrobe. So, when it comes to dressing for the outdoors, comfort is naturally the most important part of any outfit.

The outdoors is no time for a fashion shoot but if you are style-conscious then you can rest easy knowing that the Salomon come in a few different colourways so you can choose a pair that align with you style, if that kind of thing takes your fancy…

So, how comfortable are the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTXs?

The Salomon Quest 4Ds hug your feet in the best possible way. These boots are a seriously comfortable fit, providing support and cushioning in all the right places whilst still being roomy enough to ensure comfort on even the longest and hottest of hikes. The ortholite insole is a lovely bonus that further ensures comfort on a long days hike.

As a clumsy rambler prone to trips, falls and ankle-rolling, I was most excited about the high ankle collar on the Quest 4D 3 GTX. It took some getting used to after years of wearing low-cut hiking boots but the high collar is unbelievably comfortable and secure-feeling. The lacing system also allows the collar to be a snug, cosy fit.

in fact, the Quest lacing system is perfectly designed to allow you to customise the fit for your foot type. As someone with a narrow feet, I often find myself doubling up on socks. I always feel like I may lose my shoe at any point during a boggy-walk. With the Quest 4Ds, I no longer need to wear 2 pairs of socks. The lacing systems means I can get a tight and comfortable fit… even for my unnaturally narrow feet!

The best part about the fit of the Salomon Quest 4Ds? The days of my toes hitting the toebox with every descent are now (thankfully) long gone!

Though, I will note that breathability doesn’t seem to be great with the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX. So, I’m interested to see how these perform during Summer on a long, hot hike. I have a feeling the comfort level may reduce slightly due to the lack of breathability… I’ll report back once I’ve put them to the test!

STABILITY – Do The Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX Offer Stability?

Due to being such a clumsy rambler, stability is a must-have feature for me. I need to know I can put trust in my footing. Thankfully, the 4D advanced chassis reduces flex and offers protection from uneven, rocky terrain. Meanwhile the lace-locking cleats between the ankle and forefront let you lace the boots to suit whatever terttain type you’re tackling. Together, they work perfectly to offer a comfortable, secure hike.

On our Skiddaw hike, we encountered a variety of terrains – perfect for putting the Salomon Quest 4Ds to the test. The technology that makes up the Quest 4Ds work together to provide a light and stable wear.

The durable contragrip sole made walking on skree or ice patches an easy feat. For the first time, I was able to walk up a steep skree path without having to worry about slipping or losing my footing!

The cushioned and narrow-fitting upper also made he descent a stable hike. Apart from the occasional wipe out in the deep snow (obviously due to my own clumsiness) I felt more sure-footed than I ever have done before. I definitely could have done with these on my Winter hike up Helvellyn.

I’ve been on several hikes since my initial Skiddaw trip to break in the Salomon’s and the comfort and stability on the descent of the hike has to be my favourite thing about these boots!

WATERPROOFNESS – Are These Salomon Walking Boots Waterproof?

Living in the North of England, or should I just say living in the UK in general, means I’m no stranger to rain. As a result, I’m also used to my hikes and outdoor adventures being accompanied by drizzles of rain and deep puddles. This means the need for a pair of waterproof hiking boots is a necessity. So, ensuring the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX were waterproof could make or break my love for these boots.

The gore-tex liner of the Quest 4Ds is perfect for rainy hikes, unsuspectingly deep puddles and stream crossing. Thanks to the gore-tex, the water drops simply roll away almost immediately. The all-in-one design of the lining makes these boots totally waterproof to prevent any water from seeping in through the material or between the tongue and upper of the shoe.

The high ankle further offer water-protection from deep puddles, snow patches or streams. Although, it goes without saying, if you step in water higher than your boot, you’re going to get wet as the water will find it’s way in from the top.

The waterproofness of these Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX is incredible and I’ll be interested to see how it stands against the test of time.

So, are the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX worth buying? In my opinion, yes! Before buying these boots, I did my research and looked at alternatives. Yet, each and every time, I found myself coming back to the Salomons and I’m glad I did.

I’m beyond pleased with these boots and truly believe that they were serve me well across many hikes and many years of adventures. The comfort and stability has completely changed hiking for me by massively reducing the discomfort on the descents and increasing my confidence on uneven terrains. Whilst I’m happy to tackle anything on a walk, and my non-grippy hand-me-down boots have never stopped me before, it feels even better knowing you’re wearing a pair of strong, reliable boots when you do so.

So, if you’re looking to up your hiking game and buy a new pair of boots, I definitely recommend you try the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX.
