I remember trying desperately to find blue light blocking glasses a couple of years ago. I was convinced that they would be the cure for my crippling migraines and a counterbalance to all the hours I spend staring at a screen all day. But all I could find were bright yellow glasses that more resembled safety goggles than glasses.
Of course, I decided to save my pennies and my pride by opting against buying the glasses in fear of looking like a crazy professor.
Fast forward to Today and imagine my excitement to find that blue light blocking glasses have come on leaps and bounds since 2016. They’re no longer yellow and ugly. In fact, they’re pretty stylish and I’ve been wearing them ever since I bought a pair at the start of the year.
BUYING MY FIRST PAIR OF BLUE LIGHT BLOCKING GLASSES
As someone who suffers with migraines (thought thankfully not as much as I used to now that I get Botox…but that’s a story for another day) and as someone who spends 9 hours a day staring at a screen to then go home and stare at a laptop or phone screen for the rest of the evening, I get a lot of blue light exposure.
So, I thought that I would put anti-blue light glasses to the test. I wanted to know if they really could have positive effects on my life, whether it was by reducing my migraines, improving my sleep quality or minimising dazzling glare.
Blue light is everywhere. There’s no avoiding it and of course, some blue light exposure is good for you.
REDUCING BLUE LIGHT EXPOSURE COULD HELP YOU SLEEP
During the day, blue light can do wonders for your energy levels. But too much of it, especially in the evenings, could play havoc with your sleep cycle.
As much as I adore getting outside and spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors, the reality is that on Monday through to Friday, 90% of my time is spent indoors, basking in artificial (and might I add, especially blue!) lighting. It’s a 21st century sob story and it’s something that’s true for far too many of us.
Exposure to blue light suppresses melatonin causing your circadian rhythm to be disrupted and, as a result, your sleep cycle to be out of sorts. All those rumours that too much screen time before bed is ruining your sleep aren’t too far from the truth. Blue-light emitted from phone screens or laptops will play with your circadian rhythm and thus, your sleep cycle.
I already have my phone set to ‘eye comfort’ 24/7, which automatically supresses the amount of blue light emitted by your phone, and where possible, I’ve set my phone apps to night-mode and turned the screen brightness downer. Basically, I’ve been taking small steps to soften how much light I’m exposed to.
It could be a total coincidence, but since wearing anti-blue light glasses, I definitely feel as though I’ve started to settle into a better sleep cycle. Sure, I still have off-days and some nights my brain will be far too active to let me sleep. But, overall, I think my sleep has drastically improved.
Of course, part of that could be due to starting a new job and settling into a new working routine. But, I can’t totally rule out wearing anti-blue light glasses. I, hand on heart, believe that they have helped regulate my circadian rhythm by minimising how much blue light exposure I’m getting.
KEEPING MIGRAINES AT BAY WITH MY ANTI-BLUE LIGHT GLASSES
Hoping to keep migraines at bay is the number one reason why I wanted to test blue light blocking glasses. Although my migraines are nowhere near as bad as they used to be, I still find it near impossible to combat a migraine when I can feel one coming on.
One of my main triggers is light sensitivity. Shine a light my way, sit me in a room with bright artificial lighting, or force me to endure environments with high-contrast lighting and I’ll no doubt wind up with migraine symptoms (if not a full-blown migraine attack).
Thankfully, my anti-blue light glasses don’t have bright orange lenses like the ones that were available back in 2016. Instead, they look like any other pair of glasses with anti-glare coating, making them blend into the crowd perfectly.
Whilst they may not be bright orange, as soon as I put my glasses on, the light shifts to a warmer hue as the blue light is instantly blocked. It’s been a god-send for my light sensitive eyes, especially when driving to work bleary eyed at 7am.
I’ve seen the biggest impact when driving or sat at a computer. Driving to work as the sun is rising or driving at night where car head lights dazzle you against the dark backdrop of the nights sky are moments that I would dread daily.
Now, I barely worry at all. I simply put my blue-light blocking glasses on and trust that they will reduce the likelihood of migraine onset. And, it’s worked. The blue-light blocking paired with the anti-glare coating works wonders for helping to keep me migraine-free.
Of course, I’m not 100% migraine-free or cured thanks to a pair of glasses. I still suffer with migraines but wearing anti-blue light glasses gives me an opportunity to minimise the risk of migraines or prevent migraine onset from manifesting into something stronger. They’ve definitely helped me and I can feel a difference on the days that I don’t wear them.
DO I RECOMMEND ANTI-BLUE LIGHT GLASSES?
Absolutely! Whether you want to try them to help regulate your circadian rhythm, keep migraines at bay or for a completely different reason altogether, I definitely recommend giving blue-light blocking glasses a go. They’re reasonably priced and well worth the purchase. I can confidently say that I’ve felt the benefit from wearing mine and I’ll continue to wear them.
